US Open Update! The Women Start to answer their critics!

The first week is nearly over and really the big stories have been on the womens where two of the top 5 players have dropped out, and in addition to that another top 10 player Victoria Azarenka went out last night.

The players in question are Jelena Jankovic who went out to the hands of Shevedova and Elena Dementieva was beaten in a stellar match by a new american sweet heart Melanie Oudin.

Both Shevedova and Oudin proved in these matches that there is depth in womens tennis, that the top players can't just walked throuhgh to the latters stages without so much as a few warm up matches.

Melanie Oudin for me was the stand out performance, no disrespect to Shevedova but Jankovic is not quite in the same form as Dementieva, plus was on a winning streak coming into this event. On top of that Melanie Oudin suffered from a thigh injury in the match and just went for broke producing huge winners all over the court. This is also her second great performance in a Slam this year where earlier she came through qualifying to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

With Venus and Safina having to both come through three set matches, and the women have actually I think produced so far the most interesting matches so far. That maybe the Women are indeed answering their critics...?

As for the men it has started to warm up with both Murray and Nadal dropping sets moving into the last 32 , yesterday. The tournament is gathering pace and energy...I can;t wait
